Click-to-WhatsApp Ads in India — Where the Sale Actually Closes

Adyft Guide

AI Advertising

Western advertising assumes a website: click the ad, load the page, fill the form or check out. In India that chain frequently has one fewer link — the ad opens a WhatsApp conversation and the sale is agreed in the thread. Meta supports this properly with a dedicated objective. What it does not do is tell you about the several specific ways the setup fails silently, each of which we have watched kill a live campaign.

What the objective actually does

A Click-to-WhatsApp ad swaps the website destination for a chat window, opening WhatsApp with your number and a prefilled first message. What makes this matter more in India than almost anywhere is that the alternative is worse: a landing page asking for a phone number converts far below a chat that opens in an app the customer already has open.

That optimisation is the entire value. A traffic campaign pointed at a wa.me link buys you taps. A proper Click-to-WhatsApp campaign buys you conversations, and the quality difference is large.

The failures that produce silent zeros

The leading zero

An Indian mobile written as 098765 43210 must become +91 98765 43210. Keep the zero after adding the country code and you get +91 098765 43210 — a number that does not exist. The ad runs, the button appears, every tap lands on nothing, and nobody complains because the people who tapped simply gave up.

💡 This is the single most common reason a click-to-chat campaign produces zero conversations, and it is invisible in every report. Check it by hand on every campaign: tap your own ad preview on your own phone and confirm the chat opens to the right number. Ten seconds, and it catches the most expensive mistake in the format.

Connecting an Indian business number to the Page

The Page running the ad must have a WhatsApp number connected in Page settings, or the campaign fails at launch with an error that reads like a permissions problem and is not. The full list of launch-blocking causes is in the main guide.

Language is the whole campaign in India

The mechanics of a chat ad are the same everywhere. What changes in India is that one business often needs three versions of the same campaign — English for metro buyers, Hindi for a much larger audience, and a regional language where the business actually trades. They perform differently enough that running them as a single ad set hides which one is working.

The failure is rarely in the ad. It is that the enquiry arrives in a language nobody on the team replies in comfortably, and the conversation dies after two messages. In the ad account that reads as a successful campaign with weak conversion, which sends people optimising targeting when the real problem is who answers the phone.

Why the video version fails when the image worked

Genuinely obscure, and it cost a paying customer of ours sixteen failed launches across two nights. On an image creative, a WhatsApp call-to-action accepts a value containing a link parameter. On a video creative the identical value is rejected — Meta returns code 105, subcode 1815630, described only as "number of parameters exceeded". The real reason appears nowhere except a localised message buried in the response: remove the link parameter from the WhatsApp call-to-action.

Because image creatives accept it, the bug stays invisible until the first time someone uses video. If your tool has never been tested with a video Click-to-WhatsApp ad, assume it will fail.

Per-card links on a carousel

Carousels are a trap on chat campaigns — a per-card web link silently replaces the chat destination. The mechanics are covered in our Click-to-WhatsApp guide.

What it actually costs

Real figures from a Click-to-WhatsApp campaign we run in India, rather than an industry average:

₹9.39 per click

2,349 impressions, 21 link clicks, ₹197 spent.

0.89% click-through

Lower than a traffic campaign, and that is expected — you are buying a narrower, more intentional action.

First conversation

Started within the first few thousand impressions. One real conversation beats a hundred taps that go nowhere.

💡 Do not compare a chat campaign's click-through rate against a traffic campaign's and conclude it is underperforming. On the same account in the same week, a traffic campaign ran at 5.65% CTR and ₹6.31 a click, and delivered 28 page views that spoke to nobody. A chat campaign at 0.89% that produces conversations is the better buy for a business that sells by talking.

Answer the message, or do not run the ad

The uncomfortable part. A Click-to-WhatsApp campaign converts taps into conversations, and a conversation left unanswered for four hours is worth less than no conversation — you paid for it and irritated the person.

Two things help, both free and both set inside WhatsApp Business rather than in the ad:

  • 1A greeting message, so nobody is met with silence. It buys you time and signals that someone is there.
  • 2Icebreaker prompts — tappable opening questions — so the person does not have to compose a first line. Many people open the chat, face an empty box, and close it.

Make the prefilled message carry the campaign and the language. In a market where the same business advertises in Hindi, English and a regional language, the opening message tells whoever answers which conversation they are joining and which language to reply in — and getting that wrong loses the enquiry in one exchange.

A setup that works

Objective

Engagement, optimised for conversations started. Not traffic pointed at a wa.me URL — the optimisation target is the whole point.

Number format

Full international format, country code present, leading zero removed, verified by tapping your own preview.

Page linked

WhatsApp number connected in Page settings before you launch, not after the error.

Greeting set

Plus icebreakers. Free, takes two minutes, and materially changes how many chats actually start.

Who this is right for

Clinics, coaching institutes, real estate agents, salons, boutiques, tour operators, interior designers, anyone selling a service where the price depends on the conversation. If you sell a fixed-price product from a working website with a checkout, a conversion campaign to the product page will usually beat this. If your customer needs to ask three questions before they buy, chat wins every time.
